I may have central sleep apnea.?

April 18th, 2011

Sometimes when I’m falling asleep I forget to breathe. I know this because some part of my body jerks and I wake up feeling light headed and as if I hadn’t breathed for too long a time. Usually I can just roll over and force myself to think of random stuff to get my mind off of it and the problem goes away. However, it occasionally does not go away and I have to occupy myself with something for a while until I try to sleep again. Is this central sleep apnea and could this be caused (at least in part) by some sort of anxiety disorder?

It is called obstructive sleep apnea. You are not forgetting to breathe. As you are falling asleep the tissues in the back of your throat relax and fall back blocking your airway. Your body realizes that you are not breathing and wakes you up long enough to breathe 4-5 times then you fall back asleep and the cycle repeats throughout the night. You need a sleep study before you have a stroke or heart attack due to lack of oxygen during the times you are not breathing and the increased stress put on your heart.

Snoring Isn’t Sexy, LLC Launches Discussion Forum for the Public

Ferndale, WA (Vocus) July 6, 2009

Snoring Isn’t Sexy, LLC, the web’s fastest growing source of information on dentistry’s responsibility in the recognition and management of snoring and sleep apnea, announces the launch of an open discussion forum for both the public and doctors.

It has been estimated that in the United States alone 20 million men, women and children suffer from obstructive sleep apnea. Millions more snore. Of these 20 million, only about 10% have been diagnosed despite the fact that the average life span of an untreated sleep apneic is years less than those without sleep apnea. Snoring and sleep apnea have been related to heart disease, heart attacks, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, obesity, depression and erectile dysfunction as well as vehicular accidental injury and death. The increased medical costs of those with untreated sleep apnea are estimated to be in the billions a year.

“Unfortunately many physicians and patients are unaware that dentists play a role in the management of sleep apnea. Developing this forum will give all of us at Snoring Isn’t Sexy the opportunity to engage the public directly in a conversation about how we, as dentists, can help those who snore and have sleep apnea,” said Dr. Barsh. ” We feel this is a natural progression from a static web site into one that is interactive.”

While nasal CPAP is still the primary treatment for sleep apnea, recent research has proven that oral appliance therapy , in the hands of a specially educated dentist and with the appropriate case selection, can be as effective as CPAP. Oral appliance therapy for snoring and sleep apnea has been approved for use in mild to moderate sleep apnea when a patient is unable or unwilling to utilize a CPAP device.

New Express CPAP Supply Brings Wholesale Priced CPAPs To Southern California

New Express CPAP Supply Brings Wholesale Priced CPAPs To Southern California

San Jacinto, CA (PRWEB) September 8, 2007

Express CPAP Supply, home to wholesale priced CPAP machines for sleep apnea, is about to debut a brand new storefront, in San Jacinto, just west of Palm Springs in the heart of Southern California. The new store will open in Fall of 2007, and will serve customers all over Southern California. From San Diego to Santa Barbara, Los Angeles to the Colorado River, this store will be centrally located for easy shopping. With prices of about 1/3 from the other competition in the area, Express CPAP Supply is confident that many customers will make the short drive to save hundreds of dollars on sleep apnea equipment.

Express CPAP Supply first started out as a home based business on eBay. But in October 2004, eBay pulled the plug on CPAP equipment suppliers, no longer allowing the sale of prescription items on their auction Web site. Many companies failed at this time. The owner of Express CPAP Supply, Rod Petersen, took this challenge and decided to create an Internet Web site to sell these products, and http://www.YouNeedSleep.com was born. In 2006, the Web site business became so successful that he expanded his operations to include a distribution center in Tracy, Minnesota. The distribution center located in a small town infused with Mid-Western ideals and values was perfect for Express CPAP Supply to continue to grow its service-oriented business. The distribution center has really speeded up product delivery times providing another value added service for CPAP Express Supply customers.

Rod Petersen is driven not only by the success of the business; he also has sleep apnea, and uses a CPAP machine every night. Having used this equipment for over seven years, Rod has come to learn all about his sleep apnea, and which equipment works best. “Helping people is truly rewarding,” Rod says. “Helping other people with sleep apnea find better health, helping people save a ton of money, and helping people get fast professional service is what makes it all worth while.”

Customers who place orders with Express CPAP Supply get a good feeling when talking with the staff. They get warehouse pricing, at a small town shop experience. Sleep apnea patients find it comforting to speak with actual CPAP users and Respiratory Therapists. When customers call, their questions get answered by professionals who know CPAP therapy.

Express CPAP Supply is dedicated to helping patients with sleep apnea. From the on-line superstore, located at http://www.YouNeedSleep.com serving customers 7 days per week, to its Minnesota distribution center, to the new store front location opening soon in Southern California, Express CPAP Supply is helping customers save money, sleep better and wake up refreshed.

How fast is the growth of sleep apnea treatment (mainly via CPAP)?

April 12th, 2011

I’m trying to figure out how many people are buying CPAP systems and masks today and how much this is changing.

I see number like 18M people have OSA (up to 50-60M with some type of sleep issue), and the industry is growing at 8.4%, but what’s driving this? Increase diagnosis & treatment, shift demographics, more marginal suffers seeking treatment, or just newer, more expensive equipment?

Any help would be great. Cited sources would be even better!! Thanks!!

Sleep Apnea effects more than 12 million Americans! More over weight people and diabetics have sleep apnea. It usually effects men over 40 who are over weight. There are 3 types of Sleep Apnea:
1.) Obstructive…soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses and closes during sleep.
2.) Central…The brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe.
3.) Mixed…Combination of both of the
above.
You can learn more on the American Sleep Apnea Association website:
www.sleepapnea.org
This whole nation is over weight or diabetic so go figure why everyone has sleep apnea!
Being over weight is the norm now.

Do you use a CPAP machine for sleep apnea?

April 12th, 2011

Do you use a CPAP machine for sleep apnea? If so, how long have you used it? Did you notice an immediate improvement, or did it take a while?

Was it hard to get used to using the machine?

Although I don’t use a CPAP machine, I am a respiratory therapist that works for a national company that does alot of cpap/bipap machines for apnea patients. The average time it takes a person to get used to a machine is anywhere from 2 weeks to a month. The key though is for you and your DME company to come up with a mask that works the best for you and your sleeping needs. If you are a nose breather, and sleep on your stomach please let them know this. That way they can equip you with a mask that will provide you the best mobility but also seals like it needs too. Also, if you can only wear the machine for say 4 hours the first few nights, that is ok, it does take a little bit to get used to it. Hopefully the more you wear, the longer the time you can tolerate it. Also, please remember to wear the machine when you nap.
